Golden Wind Hotel – April 17-18, 2014
Here’s my short review of Golden Wind Hotel, our last hotel in our Indochina adventure.
Golden Wind Hotel is located at the popular Pham Ngu Lao Street where you can find a lot of backpackers hostel, hotels, and business establishments.
It is also few minutes away from the popular Ben Than Market, so shopping is really very easy. Along the street are a wide array of restaurants and fast food chains to cater to different palates. KFC and Burger King are just nearby if you are looking for a fast food type of meal. If you like eating bread and pastries, there are several coffee shops and bakeries just at the lobby of some hotels or lined up along Pham Ngu Lao. And of course, there are a lot of cafes and coffee shops like the favorites Trung Nguyen and Highlands coffee. If you are not done yet, bars and drinking places are scattered around depending on the ambiance that you like. There’s no need to go far. Everything is very accessible.
Getting around Ho Chi Minh is easy if you can drive a motorbike. If not, there are a lot of cabs in the area that you can hail to different places around Ho Chi Minh. However, just a word of caution, make sure you know your way around to avoid getting scammed. If you enjoy walking, that’s the best thing you can do. Ho Chi Minh is very similar to Hong Kong and Singapore where walking around is relaxing and not dangerous.
The amenities at Golden Wind are impressive – two queen size beds, control switch for the lights, lampshade, telephone, refrigerator, cable tv, cabinets, spacious bathroom, and yes, water heater (finally!).
The room looks and smells clean. The huge beds are good enough to let 3 people sleep comfortably. The control switch is so nice that it allows you to choose which lights to open and control the mood of the room. Pretty impressive for a budget hotel.
The bathroom is huge that you can even have a bathroom party (no kidding). What impressed us the most is the shower which has different controls so water comes from different directions. And yes, it has hot and cold water, too. The bidet and toilet are working perfectly. It has free toiletries like toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, shampoo and conditioner. Of course, it has our favorite dryer. 🙂
The whole room is spacious enough for the three of us. There is a window though the view outside is just so-so. The hotel has a lift and it made going to the rooms very easy and convenient. Unlike our hotels in Cambodia where we stayed on the 3rd floor and climbed our way up with all our luggage, getting to our rooms here is very easy.
The hotel serves free breakfast with wide array of choices. It also has a small restaurant inside so if you do not feel like going outside to eat, you can just order at the hotel.
The hotel staff are all very nice and accommodating. They can speak both Vietnamese and English and are available to assist you 24-hours everyday. The hotel also offers taxi to the airport for $8.
Since Travel Factor booked the rooms for us and I could not find the hotel’s website, I searched for the rates through Agoda. Looking at the rates and the amenities of the hotel, it is very reasonable for budget travelers looking for comfort and relaxation after a long day.
